AskAuggie — Ask Auggie about anything

Wednesday made the case for owning your reputation instead of renting it from your employer. Here's the good news: you can stand up a real personal presence in a single weekend, with no budget and zero interest in becoming an influencer. Five moves. Knock out three on Saturday, two on Sunday, and Monday you own something you didn't before.

1. Fix your LinkedIn headline and photo (30 min). Replace "Sales Rep at Company" with a line that says who you help and how: "Helping [who] solve [what]." Add a clear, current headshot — your phone in good light against a plain wall beats a dated studio photo. This is the first thing anyone sees; make it unmistakably a real, current professional.

2. Write your About section in your own voice (45 min). Three short paragraphs: who you help, how you work, and a line of personality. Not a resume — a human introduction. This is where a prospect decides whether you're a person or a placeholder.

3. Ask three clients for recommendations (20 min). Send three quick, personal notes today. Recommendations are portable, public proof in your name — the single most persuasive thing on your profile, and it travels with you to any job.

4. Claim your name somewhere you own (1 hr). A simple one-page site or a free link hub with your photo, what you do, your recommendations, and your contact info. Now when someone Googles you, you control the result — not just your employer.

5. Post one thing (20 min). A short lesson from a recent win, a tip your clients always thank you for, anything useful in your own words. One post signals you're active and human. You don't need a content calendar — you need to not look like a ghost.

That's it. A weekend, and your reputation finally lives somewhere with your name on the deed. Do it before you need it — the best time to own your presence is long before the day you change jobs.
