AskAuggie — Ask Auggie about anything

Most reps treat a referral like a lottery win: something that happens to you. Say thanks, cash it, wait for the next one. But the best referral-getters treat it like a seed — one that reliably grows into two or three more. The difference is a 60-second habit at the moment the referral pays off. Here's the play.

1. Close the loop out loud. When a referral closes, tell the person who sent it — specifically. "That intro to Denise? We just signed. I can't thank you enough." People refer again when they see their last referral actually mattered. Silence teaches them it didn't.

2. Ask at the peak, and be specific. Right after you've delivered — a happy client, a smooth close — is your window. Don't ask "know anyone who needs me?" (too vague to answer). Ask: "Who's the one person you know opening a location / switching providers / in the same spot you were three months ago?" One name is easy. A whole network is not.

3. Make the intro effortless. Write the forwardable blurb for them: "Feel free to just paste this to them." Two sentences on who you are and how you help. You remove the work, they hit send, and your ask actually happens instead of sitting on a to-do list forever.

4. Refer back. The fastest way to receive referrals is to give them. Send business to your clients and partners without keeping score. It comes back multiplied — and it makes you the person people want to root for.

None of this is pushy. It's just refusing to let a good referral die as a one-off. Close the loop, ask specifically at the peak, hand them the words, and give more than you take — and one introduction routinely becomes three.

And remember Monday's lesson: every one of those new referrals is going to look you up before they call. Multiplying referrals only works if what they find backs you up.
