AskAuggie — Ask Auggie about anything

This week's reader question: "Everyone says get reviews — but how many do I actually need before it makes a difference?"

Great question, and the honest answer is: there's no magic number, because reviews are graded on a curve. What matters isn't hitting 50 or 100 — it's how you stack up against the other options a prospect is looking at right next to you. Your target is relative, not absolute. Here's how to find yours.

Beat your local competitors. Open Google, search what your prospect would search, and look at the three names in the map pack. Note their review counts. Your first real target is simply to not be the obvious outlier — to be in the same conversation as the top few. Sometimes that's 15 reviews, sometimes it's 80. The competition sets the bar, not a guru.

Clear the trust threshold. A handful of research-backed rules of thumb hold up: people want to see enough reviews to believe they're real (a small cluster beats a lonely one or two), a rating comfortably above 4 stars, and — this is the one people forget — recent ones. A profile with 40 reviews where the newest is from 2023 looks worse than one with 12 that are all from this year.

Then never stop. Here's the mindset shift: reviews aren't a finish line you cross, they're a heartbeat. Because recency counts, a steady trickle — a few a month, forever — beats a one-time sprint to some target and then silence. The goal isn't "get to 50." It's "always have fresh ones coming in." An agent or business with new reviews every month always looks more alive than one frozen at a bigger number.

So the real answer to "how many": a few more than the competitor next to you, above 4 stars, with fresh ones always arriving. Hit that and the exact count stops mattering.
